East Bay Bicycle Path
http://www.riparks.com/eastbay.htm
The East Bay Bike path is a 14.5 mile, 10-foot wide, ribbon of asphalt
that provides a safe place for unobstructed cycling. Users can enjoy the
sights, sounds, and smells as the path takes them by coves and marshes,
over bridges, and through State Parks. This bike path's southern tip
will eventually link up to the Blackstone Bikeway presently under
construction.
Location: From Providence to Bristol along the
abandoned railroad line. For the greater part of its length, it passes
along or near the shore of Narragansett Bay. Access can be easily gained
from Colt State Park, Haines Memorial State Park, or Veteran's Memorial
Parkway (exit 4 off I95 East). Alternative access can be gained at any
one of 49 intersections from Providence to Bristol. Open year round -
sunrise to sunset (path does not offer snow removal).
I did this ride on a weekday in August of 2001 from Bristol to East
Providence and return. There were a number of places to eat along
the way as well as interesting attractions. I've been told the bike path
is very, very crowded on a weekend with cyclists, skateboarders,
walkers, joggers, runners. If you have the choice, you'd probably enjoy
it more during the week.
