Bicycle Helmet

Always Wear A Helmet

Something relatively new - All vehicles parked on National Forest land are required to display a parking pass where signed.  These passes ($5 for 1 to 7 consecutive days) are available at area businesses and National Forest Ranger Stations.  Tel:   (603) 528-8721.

While I did this tour by auto, I passed a number of more energetic people on bicycles.  If you love hills, you'll love cycling this area.

Site of historic Willey Slide (where Samuel Willey, his family and two hired men lost their lives after fleeing their home in 1826 due to a landslide).  House was left standing - it had been protected by an overhanging ledge and the landslide went around it on both sides.

Bear Shows (half hour shows starring trained North American Black Bears) ... Train Rides ... Your ticket ($9 ages 6 and up, $8 Seniors 65 and up, $3 children 3 - 5) includes a 30 minute excursion on the White Mountain Central Railroad.  A standard gauge woodburning locomotive steams you through the 1904 covered bridge and along the scenic Pemigewasset River.  Gift shop has a collection of working nickelodeons.  I had Brian, my Westie, with me so I was only able to quickly go through the gift shop.  A few years ago I did spend better than a half day here with all its attractions.

History of Clark's Trading Post:

First established as "Ed Clark's Eskimo Sled Dog Ranch," Clark's Trading Post was founded in 1928 by Florence M. and Edward P. Clark, for the purpose of raising and exhibiting Eskimo sled dogs.  As an added attraction to the Dog Ranch, the arrival of the first bears in 1930 helped to attract the traveling public off route 3.   Introduced in 1949, the bear show has now become the featured attraction, with the White Mt. Central R.R. making its start in 1958.  Four generations of the Clark family have personally entertained their summer guests.
