Salisbury (by-the-sea)

Settled in 1638, Salisbury is rich in old world charm, antique shops, doll house makers and fine seafood restaurants.  Salisbury's long white sandy beach is a popular summertime attraction for sunning, swimming, and fishing while its seaside amusement area is one of the largest in the northeast. The Old Burying Grounds (1639) is a cemetery featuring flat stones (wolf slabs) that were placed on graves to protect bodies.

Leaving the Salisbury State Park Campground, you can head north to Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, about 30 miles round trip.

Last three photos were along the Salisbury recreation area and along the shore road.

Newburyport

This restored seaport community is nestled along the Merrimack River harbor.  As one of the top bird watching sanctuaries in the Untied States, Newburyport combines beauty, charm and history, giving visitors a truly memorable experience.  Among a wide variety of activities you will enjoy are the visual and performing arts, museums, harbor cruises, whale and seal watches, fishing charters, unique shopping, exquisite dining, and a wealth of nature experiences at the Park River National Wildlife Refuge and the 500-acre Maudslay State Park.

Newburyport is about a seven mile bike ride from Salisbury State Park where I was camping the week before Labor Day 2001 and the first of June 2002. Since schools were in session, traffic wasn't too bad during the week. The road does have a wide shoulder, so biking here was very enjoyable.
