SANDWICH GLASS MUSEUM
Sandwich, Cape Cod's oldest town, was settled in1637 and changed dramatically in 1825 when the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company broke ground for its sprawling complex. From 1825 to 1888, Boston and Sandwich Glass fused sand and lead with exotic minerals, creating delicate objects of beauty that were in demand around the world. The museum, in existence since 1907, displays 5,000 pieces of Sandwich glass, accompanied by hundreds more in changing exhibits. Admission for adults $3.50; children 6-12 $1.00
Collectors of Sandwich glass are particularly fascinated with the Museum's extensive exhibits of cup plates. Over 800 are on display including the Albert C. Marble collection. I started a collection of cup plates a few years ago - those more recently made by Pairpoint Glass, Bourne, and plan to add the series on whales when I get back to the Cape this Fall. A few selections of glassware are reproduced by Pairpoint for sale in the Museum shop.
