Strasburg Railroad ALL ABOARD ... THE ROAD TO PARADISE Over 200 years ago the Strasburg Road passed through Gap along the Lancaster-Philadelphia Turnpike. Thus, Strasburg became an important commercial center, situated along the roads leading from Philadelphia and Delaware, and only a day away from the Susquehanna River. By the 1820s, Strasburg was a town of 1000 inhabitants and 25 taverns and inns. After debates, petitions, and delays, a rail line to connect to the main line from Philadelphia was finished in 1852, but this shortline between Strasburg and Paradise was not financially successful for many reasons. In recent years, as a visitor attraction, America's oldest shortline railroad is finally popular and thriving, as the STRASBURG RAIL ROAD. 45 minute scenic ride through Amish farmland. Your choice of coach, open air, dining, deluxe lounge or first class. If you like, you can get off for a picnic lunch and catch a later train.
