This ride is hosted by the Auburn YMCA and the Courtland YMCA of New York.  This year's event will be held 7/20-26, 2003, 7-day, 350-mile ride through the Finger Lakes Region of New York State (limited to 600 riders).  Tour route changes somewhat each year so you get to see a different area if you sign up for a second or third year.  I attended 2001 and really enjoyed the area - it is, however, very hilly!

Erie Canal Ride, 2002

This is an 8-day, 400 mile ride from Buffalo to Albany, NY, which includes both on-road and off-road cycling.  About half of the route is on the completed portion of the Canalway Trail, which will one day provide an uninterrupted 524-miles of trail.  For most days the route follow the canal along level ground.  Check out site for particulars.  July 6-13, 2003.  I did this ride last year (2002) and hope to be doing the ride this year - it's great!  Problem is, you have to get yourself and bike from Albany (where the ride ends and where you need to leave your car) to Buffalo (where the ride starts).  Options:  rent-a-car one way, train, someone drive back to Albany. Last year they had a shuttle service for you and bike for about $80. Bike has to be boxed for shuttle.  Hopefully, it will be available this year.

Annual Rhody Roundup (2001)

Flattest Century in the East (largest century on the East Coast) sponsored by the Narragansett Bay Wheelmen.  This century is held the Sunday after Labor Day.  Ride begins in Tiverton, Rhode Island, at the high school.  Options are 25, 50, 65, 75 and 100 miles.  I've done this as a century twice and as a half century three times.  (Last year, I was going for my third century but ran into mechanical difficulties at 58 miles.)  It's a beautiful ride and the weather this time of year is usually cooperative.  This ride fills up fast so if you're considering it, please don't wait too long before signing up - limited to 1600 riders.  Year 2000 prices - Narragansett Bay Wheelmen club member - $20.  Non-member - $25.  Includes T-shirt!  (It's amazing what some people will do for a free T-shirt!)

Mass Bay Road Club's 2002 Pilgrim Tour was Sunday, June 9th.  Ride is limited to 60 riders, so early pre-registration is required!  Cost:  MBRC members $25; non-members $35 (this includes your trip back to Plymouth by ferry).  For info for next year's ride, contact:  Claire Connolly (781) 749-6410 - e-mail: cecassocia@aol.com

Plymouth or Boston to Provincetown, MA.  There are a number of clubs doing this ride - one leaving from Boston sponsored by the American Youth Hostels organization.  It's a two-day (June 23 and 24, 2001) 100-mile ride, with overnighting at one of the hostels on the Cape.  Return by ferry to Boston.   Proceeds from the trip (about $1500 to $2000 each year) are given to the Youth Hostelling Opportunities Program to fund biking and hiking for urban kids.

I've done this three times (I did this year's 2002 ride) as a one day ride with the Massachusetts Bay Cycling Club.  We leave Plymouth Rock around 6:00 a.m. (trip is either in June or after Labor Day).  Biking route is along 6A.  We don't use the Cape Cod Rail Trail at all since there is sag support and this is only available along the vehicular roadways.  We have to be in Provincetown by 4:00 for the ferry to take us back to the mainland.  If you're not there by 4:30 when the ferry leaves, you have complete freedom of choice on how you'd like to get back!

http://www.ragbrai.org Bike Across Iowa ... While to some a ride through America's flat plains sounds like a sure soporific, the popular Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa has to cap the number of riders at 8,500. The ride, sponsored by the Des Moines Register, claims to be the longest, oldest and largest bicycle touring event in the world. The course always runs from Iowa's western to eastern edges but changes each year, averaging 471 miles (over 70 miles daily, and not all flat). As in years past, for the 30th installment July 21-27, 2002, expect to lodge mostly in tents in small towns along the way. Ride the week or a portion, as a tem or on your own. Entry fee $100: 800-I-RIDE-IA.

You can save China's silk road for later and still experience a historic and cultural trade route here in America. The original Santa Fe Trail - covering 800 miles between Santa Fe and New Franklin, MO - was a trading lane developed by merchants in the early 1820s. The current biking distance is about 1,100 miles. Inns and motels line the route. Willard Chilcott, of the biennially held Santa Fe Trail Bicycle Trek (next in 2003), will send bike maps to groups for the cost of postage and copying (505-982-1282).
